Calling for an end to alcohol on board MAS flights, its information chief Nor Azariza Mohd Alawi said that this is “shameful” as the Muslim leaders seem to not want to heed Islamic teachings.
“The government should feel ashamed when National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF) executive secretary Alfred Tais said that even Christianity does not encourage the consumption of liquor, and that NECF supports the proposal to bar the serving of alcoholic drinks on MAS flights,” he said in a statement.
Nor Azariza was commenting on a Sinar Harian special report yesterday on the serving of alcohol on board the national carrier.
Tais was quoted by the daily as saying that although NECF supports the banning of alcohol on board, this might be “unfair” to international passengers whose culture may permit consumption of alcohol.
He, however, urged MAS cabin crew to be “more sensitive” by serving alcohol only to those whose religions permit alcohol consumption, and to limit the drinks per passenger to avoid drunken disorder on board.
Meanwhile, to Nor Azariza said that the serving of alcohol on board the national airline of an Islamic country like Malaysia is “disappointing” as the Quran clearly states that such practice “invites God’s wrath”
The same can be said of MAS cabin crew not observing the aurat (Muslim dress code), he said.
“Even more painful is the reply in Parliament to Bachok parliamentarian Ahmad Marzuk Shaary which states that alcohol is given for free to all passengers. What sort of Islamic country is this?” he asked.
“After losing MH370, which has yet to be found, and after the hundreds of death in the downing of MH17, we still refuse to open our eyes.”
As such, he said, Kelantan PAS Youth urges the government to immediately stop the serving of alcohol on board MAS flights.
