MCA has blamed Umno's propensity to make "extremist statements" for ruling coalition BN's faltering support among Chinese voters.

Its publicity bureau chief Chai Kim Sen (left) said this in response to Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

Tajuddin  reportedly questioned MCA and Gerakan's role in the government and the parties’ apparent lack of voter support. The agriculture and agro-based industry deputy minister said leaders of parties which failed to garner support should not be appointed in the cabinet.

"We must remind Tajuddin that BN leaders who are arrogant and presumptuous like him are the main reason which cost BN the voters’ trust.

"Tajuddin should be well aware that certain extremist statements made by Umno leaders which called for Chinese support but hurt the community’s feelings at the same time, had driven the community even further away from BN," he said in a statement yesterday.

Umno shares blame

Calling Tajuddin irresponsible, Chai said the Pasir Salak MP risks creating disharmony in BN.

"Every party is duty-bound to help other fellow component parties to garner support from all races to strengthen BN.

"When the support for BN is dwindling, all parties are collectively accountable," he said.

As such, Chai said Umno, too, cannot shy away from its share of responsibility for the loss of support among Chinese voters.

"It is wrong for Tajuddin (right) to conclude that the community, which did not vote for BN, had rejected MCA and Gerakan.

"This is tantamount to avoiding one’s own responsibility," he said.

Chai reiterated that MCA will continue to play a leading role in the Chinese community and urged BN partners not to take potshots at their own allies.
