PKR's Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli is determined to press for action on Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan for issuing contradicting statements on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) issue, and has submitted the relevant documents to the Parliament speaker.

Ahmad told Parliament last Thursday that the government never issued a letter of support to undertake an RM9.6 billion loan of 1MDB.

Rafizi said in a statement today said Ahmad's subsequent remarks to the media prove the latter was aware of the existence of the support letter.

He added that Ahmad (left) was trying to evade the issue after evidence of the letter was published by several dailies.

“The documents prove that he knows all the facts surrounding the support letter, that he knows that it exists and specifically, he understood Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua's question.

“Yet, he still issued untrue statements that contradict his own facts in other media statements he had made,” Rafizi said.

Earlier today, Ahmad called on Rafizi to drop the matter as the opposition had failed to back up its claims.

Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia had also said he has not received any of the relevant documents from the Pandan MP.

Rafizi maintained he submitted the documents to the speaker today to support his motion to refer Ahmad to the rights and privileges committee for "misleading" the House.

"Whatever the speaker decides on my motion, I and my Pakatan Rakyat MP colleagues will continue to make effort to expose this problem of the 1MDB loan," the Pandan MP said.

Based on the entry in the Handsard, dated Nov 6 that was provided by Rafizi, Pua had asked Ahmad why the government showed it was prepared to foot any shortfalls by the company if it was not obliged to give any guarantee for the IMDB loan.

One of the terms of the letter states that the government “shall step in to inject the necessary capital into the issuer or to make payment to ensure obligations are fully met”.

The issuer, based on a report by The Edge Malaysia, is 1MDB Global Investment Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of 1MDB.

Pua asked Ahmad if there was a letter of support, to which Ahmad replied, “There are no letters, this is all I can answer – RM5.8 billion.”

Ahmad stressed that the government was only guaranteeing RM5.8 billion of 1MDB's debt, and insisted again that there is “no letter of guarantee more than the amount stated”.
