PSM wants Palanivel at open forum on Camerons

The Cameron Highlands division of Parti Socialis Malaysia (PSM) has called on the MP for the area, G Palanivel, to hold an open forum to discuss the floods and landslides that have taking place in the highlands.
A online petition requesting the public forum was sent to Palanivel, who is also minister of natural resources and environment as well as MIC president, and Tanah Rata assemblyperson Leong Ngah Ngah at 10am today.
It wants the MP and environment minister to discuss the mud floods with the locals.

A online petition requesting the public forum was sent to Palanivel, who is also minister of natural resources and environment as well as MIC president, and Tanah Rata assemblyperson Leong Ngah Ngah at 10am today.
“The petition is meant to initiate a discussion between the elected representatives, Palanivel (right) and Leong, with the local people in light of the recent disasters,” PSM Cameron Highlands secretary Suresh Kumar said when contacted today.
As a first step, Suresh said, the forum will act as a platform for the people to ask questions, and see how the politicians are able to provide answers about the floods and landslides in their area.
He said the people were disappointed, since projects in the Camerons were conducted without discussion or consultation with them.
'Assemblyperson Leong happy to attend'
“Also, most of the projects only benefit a small number of people, not the general population.”
Suresh said PSM has given Palanivel and Leong had given three dates – Nov 15, 23 and 31, to consider for the forum it was now awaiting Palanivel's response.
“Leong has already replied and is more than happy to be one of the speakers at the forum,” he added.
The petition, with an initial target of 50 signatories, obtained 113 respondents and one of the conditions stated is Palanivel himself must attend the forum, to be held in Tanah Rata, and not send a representative, Suresh said.
A deadly mud flood hit Bertam Valley and Ringlet in Camerons late on Nov 5 and claimed five lives.
Last year, the Ringlet lake overflowed due to continuous rain, causing mud floods that claimed four lives and damaged more than 100 houses.
The floods and mudslides that occurred over the past two years have been blamed on illegal land clearing and over-development of the scenic highlands, which is a popular tourist destination.
