Universiti Malaya Student Union (PMUM) president Fahmi Zainol says in his reply to the show cause letter from the Public Service Department that he is innocent of breaking any university rules until proven guilty.

At this moment, Fahmi said in his reply sent today, he is not guilty of any of the charges against him as stated in the Nov 6 show cause letter from PSD, which also accused him of breaching the conditions of his scholarship.

“As an accused person, I am innocent until proven guilty as I wait for the results of the Universiti Malaya disciplinary hearing that was postponed to Nov 18,” he said when contacted by Malaysiakini.

Referring to the PSD letter, the final year Administration and Social Justice student said he is positive he did not break any law in organising the ‘Anwar Ibrahim: 40 Years from UM to Prison’ event on Oct 27.

“I am confident I did not break any Malaysian law,  including the Universiti Malaya (Discipline of Students) Rules 1999,” Fahmi said.

Also accused of making 'negative statements'

In its letter, PSD threatened to withdraw Fahmi's scholarship and if found guilty, and he would have to reimburse the sum already disbursed.

It accused Fahmi of making “negative statements against the government” in an article published by news portal The Malaysian Insider on Oct 26.

"You had also made a statement that provokes students, by linking your action to the Hong Kong Umbrella Revolution and Indonesia student riots," the PSD letter states.

It said Fahmi's actions breached Clauses 5.4(a), 5.4(c), 5.5(a), 5.6 (a), and 5.7(b) of the Scholarship Agreement that he had signed on Oct 19, 2011.

Unless the university comes up with the results of the proceedings, Fahmi said, he maintains his innocence and remains adamant that he did not break any law.
