Another university, this time Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), is coincidentally going through a power outage just as student activists prepare to rally on campus tonight.
Another university, this time Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), is coincidentally going through a power outage just as student activists prepare to rally on campus tonight.
Universiti Malaya Students' Association president Fahmi Zainol, who is facing expulsion for a similar rally at his own university last month, is due to address students at UMS tonight in Kota Kinabalu.
Previously, Universiti Malaya (UM) had announced a similar "power maintenance" on Oct 27, the same day when Fahmi led students to rally on campus where Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim addressed them.
In the latest "power maintenance" by UMS, a notice was posted on the university's website announcing that there would be a power disruption beginning 9pm today, to end at 8am the following day.
"As informed by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB), there will be a power disruption throughout the time when maintenance works is being conducted by SESB at the transmission main intake of UMS", read the notice.
In an immediate response, Fahmi said he was disappointed that UMS was emulating UM in pulling off a "blackout" just as students were to gather on campus.
"The university' action is as if it is afraid of its own shadow and proves that the university is a political puppet.
"We the students are disappointed in the state of universities in Malaysia," he said in statement today.
Fahmi has been on a blitz to several local universities as part of his 'Reformasi Mahasiswa' campaign to revive student activism but has received cold treatment from university authorities.
He and seven other students are facing disciplinary action for organising last month's talk featuring Anwar in UM.
Among the charges brought against Fahmi include organising, holding and attending a rally without the vice-chancellor's permission; damaging the university's reputation; and possessing and using a megaphone without approval.
Their disciplinary hearing which was initially scheduled on Friday has since been postponed to Nov 18.
