Gerakan has condemned the urging for a mass protest by PKR vice-president Tian Chua if the party’s de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim is convicted for sodomy.

Its law and human rights bureau chairperson Baljit Singh says this is "an open pledge towards lawless violence or anarchism by PKR".

As such, he said the Batu MP should "retract his words" and explain what he actually meant.

"Chua’s call for a mass demonstration is a clear contempt of court; it can also be translated as an open challenge to the rule of law in the country, which is dangerously provocative and irresponsible,” he sad.

“Gerakan is against mass demonstrations that transgress the boundaries of the law and wrongful promotion of social disorder,” Baljit said in a statement yesterday.

Baljit's statement trails PPP’s urging that Chua be probed for sedition over his speech.

Chua, who is PKR vice-president, told a gathering outside the Palace of Justice that PKR wll protest at Dataran Merdeka this weekend if Anwar is sentenced.


He had said the BN-linked media was quick to twist the context when he said “there will be huge gatherings if Anwar were to be imprisoned”.

Chua also said that he was not directing his urging to the judiciary but to political opponents.

Anwar's final appeal against his sodomy conviction enters its seventh day at the Palace of Justice today.
