Respect Selangor fatwa on 'deviant' SIS, says Azmin

Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali has refused to comment on the controversial fatwa branding Sisters in Islam (SIS) as a deviant and straying from Islam, other than telling people to respect the edict.

"The decision has been made and I think it should be respected," he was quoted telling The Sun Daily yesterday.
According to the report, Azmin, who has been menteri besar for slightly over a month, refused to comment further on the matter despite being quizzed.
SIS on Friday announced it has filed a judicial review against the fatwa, after having discovered the edict by chance on Oct 20.
The fatwa was gazetted in Selangor on July 31 without much public attention.
It was brought forward by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) and is listed on the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) e-fatwa website.
The fatwa claims SIS subscribes to "liberalism and pluralism" and is therefore "deviant" and any other similar organisations have likewise strayed from Islam.
It also declares that any material concerning religious liberalism and pluralism must be banned and confiscated.
According to e-fatwa, the definition of "pluralism", according to the decision of the fatwa committee of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia made in July 2006 reads:
"The concept of pluralism is the central doctrine of the liberal thinking ideology.
"Religious pluralism means that every religion has its own unique concept, perception and response towards the Ultimate Reality. All religions are similar in status in reference to the Ultimate Reality."
