Writers have been urged to repel the assault by liberal religious groups who use the social media to confuse the society, particularly Muslims.

Professor of International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC), M Kamal Hassan said this in a dialogue session after delivering the keynote address at the Malaysian Writers' Summit 2014 (SKPM 2014) in Jitra, near Kubang Pasu yesterday.
Without answering specific questions of participants on the assault by liberal religious groups, including the 'I Want to Touch a Dog' campaign, he said firstly, the information on the issue needed to be studied.
He said this was important so that the issue did not cause disputes and confusion among the people, especially the young.
Earlier in his keynote address entitled 'Writing in the Downfall of Modern Civilisation Era: A Heavier Responsibility', Kamal said the writers should become problem solvers and not problem enhancers.
SKPM 2014 is the first ever gathering of writers, publishers representatives and activists in literature, language and culture nationwide.
It is a smart synergy between Kedah state government subsidiary Bina Darulaman Berhad (BDB), the Institute of Translation and Books Malaysia (ITBM) and the Writers' Association of Malaysia (Pena).
