The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Malaysians to avoid public gatherings in Hong Kong, as pro-democracy protests on the island continue.
 
It noted that thus far no Malaysians have been reported injured or arrested in the protests.
 
“The ministry is advising all Malaysians in Hong Kong to be extra vigilant and take all precautions for their safety by avoiding the various sites of assembly and large public gatherings,” it said in a statement today.
 
It also urged Malaysians in Hong Kong or those travelling there in inform the Consulate General of Malaysia of their presence.
 
Hong Kong has been hit with a wave of protests since Wednesday last week, in response to the Chinese government’s decision that those running for 2017 election to be Hong Kong’s chief executive need to be vetted by a committee, which is seen as largely pro-Beijing.
 
Police had cracked down on the ‘Occupy Central’ protestors on Sunday with water cannons, tear gas, and baton charges, but Reuters reported today that there is little sign of the movement losing momentum.
 
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Malaysians who need help in Hong Kong can reach the Consulate General of Malaysia.
