Move motion to condemn ISIS, DAP tells PM

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has asked Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to move a motion in Parliament to condemn the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
“Najib should move a motion when Parliament meets on Oct 7 to condemn in unambiguous and unconditional terms the extremism, violence and barbarism of ISIS,” Lim said in a statement today.
He commended Najib’s speech at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in which the PM denounced ISIS and called on the global community to defeat extremism.
“(Najib’s) speech has redeemed his reputation as a secret admirer of ISIS which was a result of his foolish and ill-advised initial glorification of the Islamist militants and extremists,” said Lim.
Najib in June had called on Umno to emulate the “bravery” of ISIS militants, in order for the party to survive.
In contrast, his speech at the UN last night condemned ISIS for actions which violated the teachings of Islam.
Lim, meanwhile, said that Najib’s brainchild, the Global Movement of Moderates (GMM), should be at the forefront of an international campaign to mobilise world opinion against ISIS.
“Unfortunately, the GMM is unable to rise to the challenge as it is desperately fending off attacks from extremists and intolerant right-wing groups in the country.
“Najib must align his domestic policies with his international pronouncements or he would forfeit all respect and credibility,” Lim stressed.
He urged Najib to empower the GMM to launch national and international initiatives to promote moderation and reject all forms of violence and extremism.
