Speaker of the Selangor state legislative assembly Hannah Yeoh today urged the newly appointed Selangor Mentri Besar (MB) Azmin Ali to endorse the Selangor Legislative Assembly Service Commission Enactment (Selesa) bill.

Yeoh also added that the she looks forward to working with Azmin to continue to safeguard the independence and work on the reforms of the Assembly by passing said bill.

"This bill (or it's equivalent) will ensure that the management and administration of the House are independent of the executive," she said in a statement today.

Last year, Yeoh (right), who is also Subang Jaya state assemblyperson said that she wishes to see the bill tabled and passed within her tenure.

"The enactment would give more independence to the state legislature and also more power to the state assemblypersons," she reiterated.

The bill aims to clearly demarcates the three executive branches of government - the executive, legislative and judiciary - and allows the state assembly to operate with less bureaucracy.

Then deputy speaker Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad last year said that the bill will allow the state assembly to operate without influence from the executive branch.

This means that it can carry out administrative reviews "without any restrictions and excessive bureaucracy".

First drafted in 2009, the bill mirrors the Parliament Service Act which governs the operations and financial management of the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara without executive interference.

Nik Nazmi's resigns

Meanwhile, the country's first woman speaker confirmed that she had received Nik Nazmi's resignation as deputy speaker this morning.

This is in abiding by the doctrine of separation of powers.

"I thank Nik Nazmi for his co-operation and contribution as my deputy in the last 15 months," she said, also thanking him for his help of setting up Adun Muda Selangor programme.

Nik Nazmi resigned from his post upon his appointment as a member of Selangor state executive council.
