The appointment of PKR deputy president Azmin Ali as the new Selangor menteri besar came a result of Pakatan Rakyat's inability to agree on who would take the post.
 
In a statement issued today, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's private secretary Mohamad Munir Bani, said Azmin was chosen at the end of the day as he was a deputy president of his party and also, based on the understanding that the new menteri besar must be from PKR.
 
The palace also denied that the sultan was "interfering" in the administration affairs of the state.

Munir Bani (left) said the sultan was merely exercising his "discretion" in appointing the new menteri besar.

He said that the sultan had merely "advised" the MB in the past and had never interfered in the state administration.
 
"Moreover, the refusal of DAP and PKR to name more candidates, as requested by the palace on Aug 27, complicated the situation further," his statement said.

He added that the sultan was confident that Azmin has the majority support to become the MB, given he is PKR's deputy president and PAS and DAP should not have a problem endorsing him.
 
"The sultan is confident he has strong support from not only PKR, but also PAS and DAP to form a coalition government in the state of Selangor," he said.
 
Azmin was sworn in as MB this morning after receiving belated backing from his party late yesterday.

This was after the palace decided not to appoint PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as MB, despite being endorsed as the only candidate by both PKR and DAP.
