'Charge those distorting on formation of Malaysia'

State Reform Party of Sabah (Star Sabah) supports the urging by senior Sarawak minister James Masing that those who distort facts on the formation of Malaysia be charged under the Sedition Act.
It is better to do this, instead of threatening to arrest Sabah and Sarawak nationalists who are fighting for their rights, Star Sabah leader Jeffrey Kitingan said yesterday.

It is better to do this, instead of threatening to arrest Sabah and Sarawak nationalists who are fighting for their rights, Star Sabah leader Jeffrey Kitingan said yesterday.
“We support such proposals to charge those who distort history with sedition,” Jeffrey said when commenting on a statement made by Masing, who is land development minister and president of Parti Rakyat Sarawak, the second biggest party in the state.
Masing urged that sedition charges be laid against those making Sabahans and Sarawakians angry by distorting history and stating wrong facts on the formation of Malaysia.
“Many a time ‘orang’ Malaya claimed that Sarawak and Sabah joined Malaysia. This is wrong. Sarawak and Sabah did not join Malaysia. These mistakes and arrogance have caused displeasure among Sarawakians and Sabahans.
“These two states, along with Malaya and Singapore, formed Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963,” Masing (left) stressed.
By saying that the two states joined Malaysia, he said, it implied that Malayans assumed the role of colonial master, with Sabahans and Sarawakians in the inferior role, he was quoted as saying.
Expressing support for Masing’s urging, Jeffrey said: “Sarawak BN leaders have been forthright and have articulated correctly the basis of the formation of Malaysia and the rights of Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners in the federation.
“Unfortunately, the Sabah Umno-BN leaders have largely remained silent on the basis of the formation of Malaysia.
“Those who have spoken are nothing more than parrots repeating the lines and the lies of their federal leaders.
“They do not deserve to be called Sabah leaders for their treachery and contempt in misleading the people and failing to defend Sabah’s rights.
“They should stop hiding behind the BN banners of their respective parties and come out to stand up for Sabah’s rights,” Jeffrey added.
