'Budu' in demand in Pengkalan Kubor

P KUBOR The Pengkalan Kubor state by-election is a “blessing” for some residents in the constituency, especially traders.
Those in the food business, including food stall operators, are having their hands full with the increase and non-stop flow of customers into their premises.
Unlike normally, the customers are unfamiliar faces who are there because of the by-election, like security members, election workers and government officers.
Also having their hands full are the ‘budu’ manufacturers in having to meet orders by food stall operators and restaurateurs, as well as visitors for souvenirs or gifts for family members and friends when they return home.
‘Budu’, a dipping sauce made of fermented anchovies, is popular among the people in the east coast states, especially Kelantan.
Budu maker, Ismail Jusoh, said he had to increase production since the past few days due to high demand from customers.
“On normal days, my daily production is between 2,000 to 3,000 bottles a day, but with the run up to the Pengkalan Kubor by-election, I have to increase production to up to 4,000 bottles a day,” he said when met at his house in Kampung Ketil, Pengkalan Kubor today.
Ismail, the owner of Perusahaan Warisan Ketereh, is the producer of the ‘Budu Cap Ketereh’, one of the popular brands of the fish sauce.
If not for the by-election, he said, there would be higher demand for the fish sauce during the durian and petai (smelly beans) season.
Ismail, 63, said he started his ‘budu’ business in 1980 with a capital of RM1,500.
Now, he no longer operates his business in the backyard of his house, but from a factory which is run by more than 70 workers.
Ismail said his ‘Budu Cap Ketereh’ was now available nationwide and hoped to also export it soon.
The Pengkalan Kubor by-election is called following the death of three-term assemblypeson Noor Zahidi Omar of Barisan Nasional (BN) on Aug 20.
The by-election is a three-cornered contest among Mat Razi Mat Ail of the BN, Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim of PAS and Independent Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.
Noor Zahidi had retained the seat in the general election held last year with a majority of 1,736 votes, beating Saharun Ibrahim of PKR and Izat Bukhary.
