PAS central committee member Nasrudin Hassan today said many in the party are experiencing identity crises.
 
Without naming anyone in particular, he said those experiencing identity crises consider PAS a mere political party.
 
“We have repeatedly stressed that PAS is an Islamic movement. The difference (between a political party and an Islamic movement) is obvious,” the Temerloh MP said in his Facebook post.
 
“If PAS is just a political party, then it is no different than other political parties,” he said.
 
He added that politics was one part of Islam which is championed by PAS.
 
“As such, PAS’ struggle does not stop at politics only,” he said, pointing out that tarbiyyah (education) and dakwah (preaching) were important segments championed by PAS together with politics.
 
“Why don’t they accept this reality? Why do they want people to understand PAS as a political party?
 
“Are they using PAS as a political front for them to build influence and power when they have others to manage tarbiyyah and dakwah?” he asked.
 
The party has been in the limelight recently for differing views from the various differing factions especially on the issue of the powers of the president and the Ulama Syura Council. 
 
The syura council had insisted that according to the constitution, the president has veto power and that the syura council is allowed to override the decisions made by the central committee. 
 
The progressive faction known as Erdogans have insisted that the power of decisions lie with the muktamar, the president does not have the veto power and that the syura council is merely a guiding body.
