I have a great idea. By the next general election, we should address or rather, rename all parliament members as ministers. Wouldn't that be fantastic? After all, one in every two is already in the new cabinet - there are 197 BN parliament members and 93 cabinet posts. Malaysia Boleh!

Soon after independence, if you would recall, we realised that any public utility institutions then like road works and the railways were running at a great loss. They were so overstaffed that for every person that did work, there would be five others hanging around watching him.

Only when management gurus pointed out the direct relevance of productivity to profitability that we began denationalising these sectors and privatising them.

One should not at all be surprised if, in the very near future, the same scenario returns. For every one minister working, another three would be watching him. At the rate we are going, there should be about 200 ministers, deputy ministers and parliament secretaries in the cabinet before Vision 2020.

Every department and agency will be headed by a minister. Wow! It would be fun. It would be great victory of sorts. It is open to your imagination. Prosperity would be in the means and not the ends.

At the state level, one third of state seat winners will be menteri besars, chief ministers and exco members, another one third will be heads of state agencies and the remaining one third will head state committees. A clean sweep! Most, of course, have party positions to serve too. By the way, it is an open secret that serving the government and the party pays more than serving the public.

That's Malaysian politics. It is great business. Business itself after all, never paid for the political majority. Look at the New Economic Policy and its failure since inception. The business in Malaysian politics pays better. It is a safe and secured business. Five years from now, there will be three hundred more millionaires having made their fortunes. Then see how these cabinet members rejoice with pride while comically pretending surprise.

Look at how the mainstream media showered Pak Lah with praises claiming how wonderfully he shaped the cabinet by realities. Read between the lines. It is really a story unfolding of power sharing, regional representation, sexual equality, and hedging positions in their own racial parties. That's what Pak Lah's calls Excellence, Glory and Distinction. Bravo!

For such a small country like Malaysia, can one please calculate how much money will be required to finance the activities of such huge machineries, to run several dozen ministries and several hundreds agencies and departments? Can one figure out exactly what percentage of total public money will be required to be spent on them?

Simply put, more public funds would be spent on running these colossal government machineries than what would be left for development purposes. Fat salaries, perks such as houses, cars, paid foreign holidays, allowances, first-class facilities, five-star hotels, planes, helicopters, medical treatment abroad and so on and so.

The Barisan asked for greater majority and the Malaysians gave them that on a silver platter. Lest we forgot, the saying goes, 'The simple majority corrupts simply, and the absolute majority corrupts absolutely'. So Malaysians, have fun. You asked for it.
