DAP’s Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong has called on Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai to intervene on behalf of unionists facing action by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB). 



This follows the sacking of at least 10 Railwaymen Union of Malaya members, including its president and deputy president, for picketing to urge for resignation of KTMB president Elias Kadir. 



“Ministerial intervention is necessary in the interest of the workers and KTMB itself.
 
“KTMB doesn't belong to its appointed president Elias Kadir and union officials should not be disciplined for merely organising a picket to ask the president to go,” he said in a statement. 



He also called on KTMB chairperson and Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad to step in on the matter.



Malaysiakini reported that eight more union members were sacked on Sept 9 while 110 workers were given show-cause letters for attending the picket last May. 




RUM president Abdul Razak Mohd Hassan and deputy president R Subramaniam were sacked last month over the same picket.
