Three men - a social activist and two members of the Voluntary Patrol Team (PPS) - pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court in George Town today to causing an affray at a public place on Aug 17.  

Social activist Ong Eu Soon, 51 ( right ), and Lee Chan Kwong, 36, as well as Lee Yew Kuen, 66, are accused of having engaged in a fist fight in front of the Farlim Market in Bandar Baru Air Itam at 10.45am on that day.

Section 160 of the Penal Code, under which they were charged, provides for a maximum jail sentence of six months or a fine of up to RM1,000, or both, upon conviction.

Magistrate L Umma Devi set bail at RM1,200 in one surety for each of the accused and fixed Oct 31 for mention of the case.

Head of the prosecution unit Razali Che Ani asked for the bail to be set at RM2,500 but counsel RSN Rayer, who appeared for Chan Kwong and Yew Kuen, requested that it be set at RM1,000.

Ong was not represented.
