DAP has apologised to the Selangor sultan for upsetting the ruler by nominating only one person for the post of the state menteri besar.

In a statement today, DAP also reiterates its loyalty to the constitutional monarchy.

Party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said DAP will again discuss the sultan's decree with PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

"On behalf of DAP, we want to seek forgiveness from the sultan for causing him to be saddened over our decision to submit only (PKR president) Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s name for the Selangor menteri besar post," he said in a statement today.

However, he explained that the decision to submit only Wan Azizah's name was made after discussions with Anwar.

"The decision was made in accordance with the convention practiced in 2013 when we nominated (outgoing Selangor menteri besar) Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

"We also decided to submit Wan Azizah’s name based on the statutory declarations signed by 30 out of the 56 assemblypersons in support of Wan Azizah," he said.

Lim said the decision was also made based on consensus that the menteri besar should be someone from PKR.

"We reiterate our undivided loyalty to the constitutional monarchy and will discuss with Anwar on the sultan’s decree," he said.

The Selangor palace yesterday accused PKR and DAP of "insolent and defiant" acts for refusing to submit more than two names to the sultan as requested.

The sultan's private secretary Mohamad Munir Bani said that the ruler was "deeply saddened" by the action of PKR and DAP which went against his decree on Aug 27.

PAS was the only party which obeyed the sultan's decree by submitting three names to the palace.
