Activist to face another sedition charge in Johor

Already facing charges for eight counts of sedition, Ali Abdul Jalil is expected to face yet another sedition this time in Johor.

“We were informed that he will be taken to Johor Bahru to be remanded and then charged (for sedition),” his lawyer Michelle Yesudas told Malaysiakini.
She said that this is after a police report was lodged against him at the Johor Bahru police district headquarters.
She said that Ali, 29, will spend the night in the lock up in Shah Alam tonight, after failing to post bail this afternoon for earlier charges there.

He had earlier pleaded not guilty to charges of sedition at the Selayang and Shah Alam courts.
He was charged with Section 4(1)(c), which makes it an offence to print, publish, sell, distribute or reproduce any seditious publication.
He had posted bail of RM5,000 in Selayang but was immediately re-arrested to be charged in Shah Alam.
If found guilty, Ali faces a fine of up to RM5,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both for the first offence.
He also faces a stiffer penalty if he is found guilty on both charges, as subsequent offences provide for imprisonment of up to five years.
He is the latest to be caught in the sedition dragnet, which has snared several politicians, an academic and a journalist.
