A state assemblyperson's majority support in the House is not the sole consideration for appointing the menteri besar, said the Selangor palace.

Therefore, the ruler might even choose a state rep from Pakatan Rakyat who is not on the lists of potential candidates submitted to the palace.

"As the power to appoint the menteri besar is the sultan's prerogative, therefore his highness will look at the names of other state assemblypersons in Pakatan who to the sultan's mind enjoys majority support in the state assembly," said the ruler's private secretary Mohamad Munir Bani in a statement today.

He said since majority support is not the sole criteria, the palace required more than two names from the respective parties in Pakatan as per convention.

"This is to allow his highness to make a choice on the future menteri besar by considering not only the majority support of state assemblypersons but also in terms of skill, experience, integrity and ability of the the state assemblyperson," he said.
 
Munir added these criteria are important to ensure the state administration can go on smoothly.
 
"The Selangor sultan is confident that there are many candidates in Pakatan which have strong leadership qualities as mentioned to led the Selangor government," he said.

Sultan will scrutinise
 
However, Munir said the sultan will still scrutinise the candidates which were already submitted to the palace before a decision is made.
 
Both PKR and DAP have PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (left) as its sole candidate for menteri besar for the palace's consideration.
 
The Selangor palace today slammed both parties for not complying with the sultan's decree for them to submit more than two names.
 
Meanwhile, the PAS central committee had also endorsed Wan Azizah but also proposed her party deputy Azmin Ali as an alternative.
 
However, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang overruled the central committee and submitted three names of his own to the palace which comprise two PKR and one PAS state assemblyperson.
 
The list omitted the names of Wan Azizah and Azmin.
