Abdul Rashid has failed us big time
A lot has been written on the significance of BN's electoral victory on Sunday and the almost total annihilation of the opposition. For any analysis to be relevant, the assumptions that would lead to the conclusion need to be confirmed for them to hold water and in this case we have all missed some important points.
As one observer had put it, was there a level playing field? Was the EC truly independent and most crucial of all was the election process fair and untainted?
As Jarrod had put it, there were so many irregularities at his polling station itself. From double voting to wrong gender etc. all occurring under the noses of a so-called impartial Election Commission. The validation of votes and their counting were questioned even by the ruling party. Elsewhere, ballot boxes were claimed to have been tampered with. The list goes on.
I think the first task that Pak Lah has to do is replace EC chairman Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman and totally revamp our voter registration system. I do not think it needs a super genius to work it out, there are other working models in other countries. A poor system will be prone to manipulation, usually in favour of the party that an election commission or its officers prefer.
Before our next elections, let us all put pressure on the government to get our election process right and above all transparent.
Finally to all the pundits out there, there is no point in trying to make sense of data from a flawed process. In another country this election would have been declared null and void and recalled. Our EC has failed us big time.
