Students protest with corpse effigy at KDN

University students protested at the Home Ministry today against the Sedition Act with an effigy of a corpse.

The Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Semalaysia (Gamis) students said they wanted to send a message to the Home Ministry that the effigy symbolises democracy is dead after Universiti Malaya law lecturer Azmi Sharom (right) was charged under the Sedition Act.

The group of about 30 students mostly dressed in black, tried to hand over a memorandum to the ministry.

The group also tried to hand over the effigy of the corpse but failed to do so.

An officer of the ministry who initially received the memorandum later returned it to the group.

Other than demonstrating against the charge placed on Azmi, the students also demanded for the Sedition Act to be abolished.

In the recent list of those cracked down for sedition, Azmi had been the only academician charged.

The others have been mainly opposition politicians as well a Malaysiakini journalist who was also arrested.

Azmi was charged on Tuesday for sedition over remarks he made in a news report on the ongoing Selangor menteri besar crisis.

Earlier today, former student activist ormer Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) chairperson Muhammad Safwan Anang @ Talib was jailed for 10 months for sedition by a sessions court in Kuala Lumpur.

A 29-year old university student Abdul Jalil Ali is also slated to be charged under the Sedition Act on Monday for allegedly insulting the sultan of Selangor

Gamis said that this is the first of its kind of demonstrations and more are planned in coming weeks.
