Set right example for First World mentality
In my humble view, the country's leaders should first and foremost set the right example if they really want our people to have a First World mentality.
They themselves should compare their performances with the practices in developed countries especially with regard to a free press, equality before the law, freedom to participate in elections (as voters, candidates and workers), independence of an Election Commission and judiciary, use of govt machinery and a host of other issues.
They should learn to respect those with different viewpoints and give them an equal chance to air their views. They shouldn't treat this country as if it only belonged to them and only they and like-minded accomplices have the right to determine its future.
If simple things like respecting the wishes of the people, even though they may not agree with the powers that be, cannot be upheld then the First World Dream will remain as elusive as ever.
If the people disagree, find out why and try to win them over the next time. Don't punish the people who have taken the trouble to exercise their inalienable rights to choose the government and opposition of the day.
I would like suggest that all government elected reps report to the people on how far they have conformed or otherwise to the true principles of democracy and Islamic governance and discuss steps they will take to improve conformity.
Almighty God and the people at large will be watching them.
