PKR parliamentarians plan to table an emergency motion on the Sedition Act at the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting, following a spate of sedition charges in the past month.

PKR’s MP for Pandan Rafizi Ramli said the move is meant to "send a clear signal" from the rakyat to the Najib Abdul Razak’s administration.

Speaking at a press conference today, he said that the motion will call for the immediate repeal of the Act.

Flanked by six other PKR MPs, Rafizi said that the party’s members of parliament will lobby the Dewan Rakyat speaker to ensure the motion can be tabled and debated.

"The sitting is in two month’s time, so if he does not try to include the motion into the order of the House, then (he) will have to stand up to us for two months," he said.

Those present today include Nurul Izzah Anwar (Lembah Pantai), R Sivarasa (Subang), Wong Chen (Kelana Jaya), Dr Tan Kee Kwong (Wangsa Maju), Tian Chua (Batu), N Surendran (Padang Serai) and Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin (Bukit Katil).

Among those who have come sedition dragnet include Surendran, who has been charged with sedition twice in two weeks over remarks made on the sodomy trial of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Surendran is acting as Anwar’s lawyers for the case.

Other PKR leaders facing sedition investigations or charges include Chua, Rafizi and Johor PKR vice chairperson Hassan Karim.
