Penang DAP Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer has been detained under the Societies Act today, and is currently being held at the Northeast District Police headquarters at Jalan Pattani.
Penang DAP Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer has been detained under the Societies Act today, and is currently being held at the Northeast District Police headquarters at Jalan Pattani.
Rayer said the police asked him to give his statement at about 3pm and then told him about the arrest.
"I was only told it is under Section 43 of the Societies Act, 1966. They also told me I have to stay the night at the police HQ," he added.
Rayer's detention follows 156 voluntary patrol unit members (PPS) who were arrested after participating in the Merdeka March yesterday.
Among those arrested were state cabinet member Phee Boon Poh (right) who is PPS chairman.
Rayer, is one of the lawyers for the group, who are currently being released in stages, after police failed to obtain a four day remand to keep them behind bars.
They were arrested as Inspector General Police Khalid Abu Bakar declared the PPS illegal as it was not registered with the Registrar of Societies.
He has also accused PPS of being involved in "gangsterism".
Charged with sedition
Rayer was previously charged under Section 41 (b) of the 1948 Sedition Act for uttering the word "celaka" which he had directed at three Umno leaders.
Rayer was alleged to have uttered the word at the Penang Legislative Assembly proceedings on May 20, and also during a ceramah in Island Glades, three days before the Bukit Gelugor by-election polls on May 25.
Met outside the gates of the police headquarters, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said George Town OCPD Mior Faridalatrash Wahid has confirmed the arrest.
"Mior said Rayer is the last arrest but then we do not know," he added.
Meanwhile, Mior confirmed the arrest of Rayer, saying he was detained to assist in the police probe.
"He was arrested at 6pm, as he is the chairman for PPS at the Seri Delima constituency level," he said.
Asked if Lim would be next in line, Mior replied "No".
