'Sad' MP gives statement to cops on spit attack

The police today recorded Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad's statement over a spitting incident against his colleague Khalid Samad by a group of youths.

Raja Kamarul Bahrin said he went to the Sentul district police headquarters as a witness as he was present with Khalid, who is also Shah Alam MP, in front of the Jalan Duta Court Complex on Aug 26 when the incident happened.
"I am sad that on our 57th Merdeka Day, I had to give statement on a despicable spitting incident and gangsterism that took place at our House of Justice.
"It shows since Merdeka we have not progressed much and the minds of some of the Malay youths have not developed enough intellectually to 'hujah' (debate) but instead chose to 'ludah' (spit) to show their disagreement on issues," he said in a text message.
The Kuala Terengganu MP blamed constant inaction and "deafening silence" of the authorities which has bred the current culture of hatred.
"If elected MPs can be spat on at the front grand steps of our honourable House of Justice and be hounded by a rowdy group of thugs all the way through the car park without any of the court security or police intervening...
"This is surely a sad sign of deafening silence of the authorities to restore any sense of law and order in our society," he said.
Raja Kamarul pointed out that following this incident, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng became the latest victim with his house being fire-bombed last night.
"Before this, churches were also fire-bombed, the severed cow head incident, racial abuse at road rage and the list goes on and on.
"Despite the 1Malaysia slogan, no real effort has been taken to get to the root of the problems.
"Extremist groups like Perkasa, Jati, Isma and others have been allowed to flourish," he lamented.
A group of youths had spat Khalid as he was leaving the court after being charged with sedition for wanting the Selangor Islamic Religious Council's executive powers curbed.
Khalid said his immediate reaction was to hit the youth but Raja Kamarul held him back and calmed him.
