Fairchild closing down Bayan Lepas plant

Fairchild Semiconductor is closing down its Bayan Lepas manufacturing plant along with its facilities in West Jordan, Utah and Bucheon, South Korea as the group plans to consolidate is operations.

Special Adviser to Penang Chief Minister, Lee Kah Choon, said the state government investment promotion agency, Invest-in-Penang Bhd (investPenang), was in constant contact with Fairchild to offer the affected staff job placement options, job counselling and other assistance.
He said as at July 31, 2014 there were 11,759 jobs available in Penang.
“We will be working with Fairchild to ensure that the existing factory land will be effectively used for higher value manufacturing which is in line with the redevelopment plan of Bayan Lepas industrial park,” he said in statement in George Town today.
Fairchild is one of the pioneers of the chip industry in the 1950s and it started its operation in Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, phase II, in 1972 on 370,000 sq ft built-up manufacturing area.
Its investment in Penang had catalysed the semiconductor business in Malaysia to be one of the world’s largest producers of computer chips.
Lee said investPenang would also be assisting small medium enterprises (SMEs) and local vendors affected by the expected disruption in Fairchild’s supply chain via opening of new market opportunities.
He said this would be carried out through the Penang SME Market Advisory, Research and Training Centre.
“Already two big multinational companies (SanDisk and Haemonetics) are in the midst of completing their facilities in Batu Kawan Industrial Park and Seagate has also recently informed that they will be building their multinational facility in the same park,” he said.
Fairchild is a maker of power converters, amplifiers and switches used in cars and consumer electronics and the Penang plant closure is expected to affect approximately 1,892 workers.
