Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah has called for the entire MRT project to be suspended pending investigations into its safety.

Sivarasa (right) said the incident that claimed the lives of three workers yesterday is the second such case involving MRT in two months.

"Road users who frequently pass through MRT work sites should have confidence in their safety. These two incidents, unfortunately, do not inspire any confidence.

"Therefore until this confidence is restored through detailed reports, I urge that the works be stopped immediately," he added in a statement today.

Sivarasa also called on MRT Corp to allow experts appointed by local governments to investigate the safety of MRT’s worksites, as well as to allow investigations into the experience and expertise of sub-contractors handling the project.

Following yesterday's accident, MRT Corp has already suspended all work in Package V1, where it occurred, and its CEO Azhar Abdul Hamid (left) announced his resignation this afternoon.

On June 24, a metal sheet pile at the Pusat Bandar Damansara MRT station construction site fell onto a car and struck another vehicle, causing one injury.

The MRT Corp site supervisor involved and the sub-contractor Bersatu Hati Enterprise have been terminated from their jobs following the accident.

In the latest incident, 650 tonnes of concrete fell on three Bangladeshi workers at the Kwasa Damansara MRT station construction site, near Kota Damansara.

The subcontractor for the work package involved is Syarikat Muhibbah Perniagaan dan Pembinaan Sdn Bhd.

Separately, Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai urged Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) chairperson Syed Hamid Albar to resign as well for supposedly failing to ensure that accidents do not take place at MRT construction and LRT extension projects.

“Although it is difficult to prevent accidents, these incidents show that there are lapses in safety procedures.

“If these are not given attention, workers and members of the public will be facing many problems,” Tan said.
