Property developer Eco World Development Group Bhd has chosen to remain silent over allegations that it was involved in the debt settlement between Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and Bank Islam.

After several attempts, including phone calls, emails and even a visit to the company over the last week, Malaysiakini was finally able to reach its corporate communication department.

“We are not giving any response at the moment. We are taking a back seat on this issue,” said a member of the staff who requested anonymity.

PKR in a 91-page document detailing its case against Khalid, had questioned the project which was granted to Eco World just months after Khalid's out-of-court settlement of a RM66 million loan with Bank Islam.

PKR alleged that this was because an executive of Eco World, who is also a pro-Umno lawyer, had acted as a “broker” for Khalid’s settlement.

Malaysiakini has yet to obtain the response of the “broker”.

The document stated that on Feb 13 this year, Bank Islam's appeal on Khalid's debt at the Federal Court did not proceed and the court was told that an out of court settlement was being negotiated.

It said that on Mar 19, Tropicana Corporation Bhd announced that it would sell 308.72 acres of land it purchased from the Selangor government in April 2013 to Eco World.

"On Mar 25, Khalid signed a memorandum of understanding with (the company) awarding them a project to build 2,400 affordable homes under the Selangor government worth RM591 million.

"On Mar 31, Bank Islam and Khalid told the court both parties had agreed to drop the case as a settlement has been reached," the document reads.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution (left) had raised this matter last week, arguing that Khalid’s integrity had “become doubtful” after he kept quiet on the issuance of the housing project and the debt settlement.

Khalid, however rebutted Saifuddin’s allegation swiftly and sent a delegation to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), asking it to investigate this matter.

Khalid’s office executive communication officer Shazni Munir Mohh Ithnin also defended Khalid over this issue, dismissing Khalid had favoured Eco World for the affordable housing project for personal gain.
