Water situation in Kuching returns to normal

The water situation in Kuching has returned to normal following recent rainfall over the catchment areas, according to Public Utilities Minister Awang Tengah Ali Hassan.
The water situation in Kuching has returned to normal following recent rainfall over the catchment areas, according to Public Utilities Minister Awang Tengah Ali Hassan.
He said the Kuching Water Board (KWB)’s initiative to widen the catchment flaps by 0.5m in April, enabled raw water storage level to reach 300 mega litres, thus avoiding a water shortfall in Kuching.
“Without this we could have faced a slight problem in the last few weeks but I am very thankful to KWB for having done it.
“However, as the dry and hot season is not over yet, consumers are requested to continue to conserve and use water sparingly,” he told a press conference after attending a briefing at the KWB Batu Kitang Treatment Plant near Kuching today.
He said KWB was also exploring the possiblity of having ‘on’ and ‘off’ river bank storage to increase the raw water storage capacity.
“This is to counter the recurrence of prolonged drought,” he said, commending KWB for its contingency plans.
He said the Batu Kitang Treatment Plant No 3, which was being upgraded and rehabilitated from 200 MLD to 400 MLD would potentially meet Kuching City as well as greater Kuching’s (rural Kuching and Samarahan Division) water demand.
He said KWB currently had a storage capacity of 500 MLD, and the new plant scheduled to be completed by June 2017, would have a total raw water storage capacity of 780 MLD.
Awang Tengah said the total demand for treated water in Kuching was about 450 MLD daily, involving 147,000 connections.
On complaints of dry taps in state Public Works Depatment-managed areas, he said the department was upgrading its water treatment plants in stages.
