Cuepacs today urged the government to retain the Sedition Act in the interest of preserving peace and harmony in the country.

Its president, Azih Muda said the umbrella union for civil servants felt the act was still relevant.

However, he said the call did not mean the union was objecting to the government's plan to abolish the act, only that they had doubts as to the effectiveness of the new act that would replace it.

"We suggest to the government specifically Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to review the plan to abolish the Sedition Act.

"This is because we are not confident the act that will replace it would be up to the task. The Sedition Act is good to prevent attempts to sow discord in the country," he said when met at the Aidifitri open house hosted by Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman at Dataran Seberang Takir in Kuala Terengganu today.

Prior to this, Najib had announced that the Sedition Act 1948 would be abolished and replaced with the National Harmony Act.
