As the general election draws nearer, the true colours of politicians will be known. Those with political ambitions are seen hogging the limelight, even to the extent of distributing personalised calendars!

Some seasoned politicians cannot be dropped by their parties without threatening to cause trouble for their replacements. It is going to be a season for the frogs.

Just recently, a young politician found opposition politics too demanding and is now given star treatment by MCA.

Will she become the youngest state assembly representative or member of parliament? I do not think voters like those who are impatient, whatever his or her qualifications or credentials.

Lim Kit Siang has been accused of practising nepotism by grooming his son, Guan Eng as a future leader of DAP. For those who are new to Malaysian politics, this accusation seems so ludicrous as it implies the accusers are jealous of senior Lim allowing his son to experience a jail sentence!

I would expect people to connect nepotism with the glamour and power advantages that come with being linked to the prime minister, a minister or chairperson of a company.

Opposition politicians are most admirable for their personal sacrifice in fighting injustice, corruption and for good governance and accountability in government projects and policies. For those who are married, they need the support and sacrifice of their spouses, parents and children too.

Contrast this with being a BN politician! There is no need to worry about being arrested or put in jail so long as he/she knows how to parrot the latest statements by the premier and not to rock the boat.

There are plenty of opportunities to go round in terms of positions, shares or government contracts. The election machinery is already in place with radio, television and the print media on their side. No shortage of funds (no campaign limits too in spite of election laws) and even the Election Commission and the police can be counted on to be friendly!

I would give my sympathy vote (even if nothing else) to those who have been victimised in their selfless cause, for the good of the country.
