I was alarmed to read about the experience of our fellow citizen's run-in with three policemen in Nilai ('Nilai's highway robbers aka men in uniform').

The veiled threat of 'finding' dadah in his car if settlement was not forthcoming just goes to demonstrate the kind of evil that lurks amongst society's protectors. The root of these problems lies in part in our justice system.

When the average person commits a murder, he or she is sent packing to prison pronto, but a policeman get suspended pending enquiry. That is justice for citizens who pay taxes.

These protective safety nets that cops seem to enjoy gives them the impression that they are untouchable. Far too many cases have been reported about police complacency and corruption, but political response to protect the average citizen is at best muted or often reactive.

Besides, giving allowances for excesses by cops gives politicians some room to flex their muscles as well. Very quid pro quo. Sounds conspiratorial, but there is I believe an enormous ring of truth to that.

The muted response to complaints about addicts at the Tenaga Nasional Berhad complex where Nurul Huda Abdul Ghani was abused and murdered just demonstrates their attitude towards protecting the people.

And it is appropriate to ponder who is the lesser of the two evil...a rapist or a corrupted cop? The latter is certainly more evil simply because if they do their duty we will certainly see much less of the former.
