A Korean tourist is facing a police investigation for wearing a kaftan which appear to be bearing verses from the Quran.
 
This comes after a photograph of the woman wearing the kaftan was circulated on the Internet, courting angry responses from the Muslim community.
 
"Police have begun investigating the mak cik (auntie). She is Korean and only just arrived here (in Malaysia).
 
"(She) bought it (the kaftan) from India. Let us investigate. Everyone is urged to be patient," said Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar (below).
 
The photograph of the woman wearing the kaftan was at a shopping centre in Ampang was circulated on social media and instant messaging applications since yesterday.

Another photograph showed a man wearing a robe telling off the woman.
 
Netizens slammed the woman for insulting Islam while some mistook the woman for ethnic Chinese and hurled racial slurs.
 
Khalid said police viewed the matter seriously but urged calm among the public.
 
"There are some things police can act on immediate and some others require time for us to act in a rational manner. We will perform our duty.
 
'Debate over tourist'
 
"Police will not be biased. All offences will be investigated regardless of race. We must respect our legal system," he said in another series of postings on Twitter.
 
The postings was also re-published on the police's official Facebook page. 
 
Police clarification on Facebook that the woman was a tourist did not placate some as a debate rage on over the matter.
 
"If someone is accused of trafficking drugs and is in possession of the drugs, they will be punished even though they were not aware.
 
"In this case, if Korean person wore clothing with sacred Quranic verses, it is still wrong in this country. Wrong is wrong.
 
"Is there no Islam in Korea? The whole world knows about Islam. This is a matter of religion, Islam is Malaysia's official religion," said one user Dyla Dz.
 
However, others urged reason, with one user Putera Alkiram stating: "The auntie is Korean. She does not know what is written on the clothes. She probably bought it for remembrance while on tour.
 
"Call up the auntie and explain to her that it is wrong, then perhaps she will understand. Don't just curse her, it is not right".
