'Fight for Selangor MB's post really over money'

Rather than fighting for the people's sake and finding the best leader, the heated contest for the Selangor menteri besar’s position has always been about money, really, says Selangor BN vice-chairperson Abdul Shukor Idrus.
Rather than fighting for the people's sake and finding the best leader, the heated contest for the Selangor menteri besar’s position has always been about money, really, says Selangor BN vice-chairperson Abdul Shukor Idrus.
The people, Shukor (right) said today, were blinded by sweet talk and empty promises but the menteri besar had direct access to wealth through the appointment of officials to head state-linked corporations, state councils and so forth.
"Look closely and you will see that those who succeed are not noble men. They just want to sell away state assets that at one time were planted and grown by the BN government," Shukor is quoted as telling Umno Online.
This is why Anwar Ibrahim, the state economic adviser who is only paid RM1, and incumbent MB Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, will fight tooth and nail for the MB’s position, he continued.
“Fight after fight, including the latest round, are all just attempts to break into the treasury," he claimed.
Shukor, who is the state assemblyperson for Kuang, said Umno was just watching the situation from afar but stressed that it was the BN opposition in Selangor that was now really looking after the people's interest.
"It's the treasure grab that we want to monitor and worry about. Let them solve the seemingly unending internal party crisis themselves," he said.
Khalid became Selangor menteri besar in 2008, after Pakatan Rakyat won control of the state administration from BN and after a resounding win again in GE13 last year, he was re-elected for a second term.
Yesterday, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim warned that there was no permanent position of menteri besar, for the person had to have the support of the political parties.
This seemed like a veiled threat to Khalid, who had just hours before, told reporters that he would serve out his second term until at least 2018, despite speculation that he could be toppled by next month.
