After reading the letter by Khairull Anuar Jamlus titled, 'Not planning to adopt a Western liberal lifestyle', I could not help but respond.

It is ironic that although he is not planning to adopt a Western liberal lifestyle, he is happy to be living in a Western country. The British government, which he praises for taking action against Muslims and Islam bashers, also allows considerable religious freedom for people like Khairull.

Unfortunately if PAS, the party which Khairull sympathises comes to power, I cannot imagine what action will be taken against Christian or Buddhist bashers. Religious freedom should be for everyone. But PAS has publicly stated that it would impose the death penalty on Muslims converting out of Islam. How would Khairull like it if a conservative Christian party rules Great Britain and imposes the death penalty on Christians converting to Islam?

Khairull also forgot that the great alcohol industry in America creates a lot of jobs for many people. While in America, the government has to pay a lot for damages resulting from alcohol-related accidents, the Malaysian government has to pay a lot for damages resulting from road accidents. So should we ban driving as well?

And rapes do not happen in America alone. It happens here in Malaysian too. If Khairull thinks that rape incidents in America are high, he should also consider the American population. What about the proportionately high incest incidents in Malaysia?

Khairull, like many of our politicians, seem to equate rotting morality with Western lifestyle. Well, I have reservations for some of our Malaysian 'values' too. Spitting everywhere, talking loudly, not saying thank you, staring at others, are some of the minor immoralities of Malaysians.

Immorality should not be equated with a certain group of people, whether from the East or West. It happens everywhere. And PAS coming to power will not stop immorality.

After all, there are rape cases even in Kelantan and Terengganu. And some of these rapists wear white skullcaps when appearing in court! Maybe this is the 'illiberal Eastern lifestyle' Khairull may wish to adopt.
