Providing humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza in Palestine would be more meaningful than a special Parliament session to discuss the Palestinian issue, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

Khairy (right), when commenting on the opposition's proposal to hold a special parliament session to discuss the Palestine issue, said the people of Malaysia too feel the need to support the humanitarian cause because in this time of need, such aid was important.

The Pakatan Rakyat council secretary-general was reported to have said a special Parliament session should be held, just like in January 2009, and the government should recall the Malaysian Ambassador to the United States as a mark of protest.

Khairy said the people of Palestine need action not just discussions.

The opposition pact had pointed out that Malaysia, as a small nation, was not capable of ending the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip - which is believed to have claimed more than 150 lives.

Khairy said Malaysia had always supported the struggles of the Palestine people and provided aid in terms of money, humanitarian assistance and moral support and at the same time condemned the action of Israel.

"The government will also send a humanitarian aid mission to Gaza. Even if we have a special parliament session, it is going to be the same decision," he said, adding that Umno Youth would also send a team to join the humanitarian mission to Gaza.
