DAP features another ‘awek cun’ in its fold

Having sparked a frenzy of wolf whistles by fielding an attractive young woman Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud in the Teluk Intan by-election, DAP unabashedly features another ‘ awek cun’ set to send hearts aflutter.

In an article on its Malay language party organ Roketkini, it is precisely with the words ‘awek cun’ that tudung-clad Young Syefura Othman, 25, is introduced.
'Awek cun' is a colloquial Malay term, referring to a pretty young woman, equivalent to the slang term ‘hot chick’.
“The ‘awek cun’ population of DAP is on the rise. Following the Teluk Intan by-election, more and more (of awek cun) are stepping forward to fill up the membership form for the party which has long been slandered as a communist of Chinese chauvinist party,” the article kicks off with much aplomb.
The presence of Young Syefura (left), or as she is referred to in the article, Rara, along with her cohort of ‘awek-awek cun’, the article states, chips away negative perception towards the party.
“As the (Malay) saying goes, you can’t love if you don’t know. After long being smeared as a chauvinist party, the presence of these awek-awek cun suddenly melts away the negative perception.
“This inadvertently attracts more people to get to know the party, which has been bad-mouthed by its detractors with all sorts of false tales,” the article continues.
Pretty (and bright) young things
DAP’s strategy of seeking out pretty (and bright) young things is not new.
Indeed the record holder for the youngest person to be elected into the Dewan Rakyat is held by feisty female lawyer Fong Poh Kuan, elected MP for Batu Gajah at the age of 26 on the DAP ticket in 1999.
The 2011 Sarawak election also saw DAP send four young female professionals to state legislative house.
The portrayal of Dyana Sofya (right) as a beauty with brains, did not win DAP favours from women’s group Empower, who frowned on how the “promising” young woman was “packaged” according to her physical appearance.
Roketkini, meanwhile, is aware of criticism that DAP is trying to woo supporters by dangling ‘hotties’ in its midst.
“Even worse are incessant accusations from detractors that DAP is using these beautiful ladies to attract more Malays.
“Rara sees this as something positive, as for her, this shows that the other side are out of ideas and are just finding fault.”
“The fact is,” the article reads further, “more and more are attracted to join the DAP.”
