The paradox of alcohol consumption
Abdul Rahman Abdul Talib suggests that 'PAS' policy on liquor is progressive'. Well yes, only to PAS.
There is no doubt that alcohol can be addictive and there is a segment of the population that would benefit from some form of addiction management. That's what social and religious organisations help to do, the very organisations that would probably be marginalised under PAS.
I wonder if Abdul Rahman has considered the French paradox? Research results show that although the French population has the highest risk factors for coronary artery disease in terms of consumption of saturated fats and cigarette smoking, the prevalence of coronary artery disease and its complications are not as expected. This has been attributed to the light consumption of red wine (French, no doubt).
Should moderate wine drinkers be at a disadvantage? I agree that this may be a frivolous article, which pales in comparison with Abdul Rahman's other policies, but shouldn't he consider the flaws in his argument? Do Malaysians consume as much alcohol as the British?
