KINIBIZ CIMB Group CEO Nazir Razak will become the group’s chairperson and join Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s board of directors effective Sept 1. Is this the start of greater things for the prime minister’s brother? Tiger ponders the possibilities.
Tigers are creatures of habit, and generally not fans of change. Ask a Tiger to change its diet and it will probably eat the dietitian who recommended it. The same goes with the corporate world; humans tend to be creatures of habit, just like Tigers. They don’t like change, but are often propelled into it by circumstances or through engineered moves, as in a game of chess.
Tiger is not one to gamble, but she believes that in the bigger scheme of things, one has to take a chance on change. One human that appears to have done so is Nazir Razak, currently CIMB Group group managing director (MD) and CEO, who will be joining Khazanah’s board of directors on Sept 1 and will be redesignated as CIMB Group chairperson on the same date.
Current chairperson Md Nor Yusof is retiring from the board, hence paving the way for Nazir to assume his role.
In a statement, Nazir said that he has “long aspired to become chairman of CIMB Group as my next career move, in line with my love and deep commitment to the organisation” and also said in an internal note that he “will continue to helm the organisation albeit in a different role and that no one should be unduly concerned”.
