Road manners by Malaysians really need looking into and be seriously practised.

Our hard working police officers, especially those from the traffic branch, really deserve my big thank you. Rain or shine and during peak hours, they are there at major roads ensuring traffic moves smoothly and ensuring road users behave themselves.

The recent road accidents and deaths could drastically be minimised if the following are strictly practiced by every road user:

1) Signal lights: Please use them when changing lanes or when turning left or right. Giving proper signals will give enough time for other road users to take the necessary action to react to the directional change.

2) Take off all sunshades at the back of the car when driving: It is dangerous for the road user driving behind for not being able to see further ahead and not being able to react more quickly to any sudden changes up ahead.

3) Be more positive in your outlook when on the road: For example, give way to road users who do put on their signal lights when switching lanes, etc.

4) Drive in the proper lane - slow drivers on the left most lane, and overtaking other cars on the right-hand most lane. The middle lane is for cruising.

5) Don't drive if you are emotionally aggressive.

6) Don't just think that the police are to do all the hard work of enforcing: We, the road users, have a role to play too. For example, we can be more disciplined on the road without jumping queues even with no law enforcers around.

There are other examples and efforts, but at the end of the day we play the major role in ensuring our roads are safe. The prime minister and the traffic police have done their part, now its our turn to put into practise what has been said.
