Isma chief slapped with sedition charge

Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman is today charged with two counts of sedition at the Kajang Sessions Court for labeling Chinese Malaysians as "intruders".
Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman has been charged with one count of sedition and another alternative charge at the Kajang Sessions Court this morning for labeling Chinese Malaysians as "intruders".
He was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 for using the term as well as an alternative charge under Section 4(1)(c) of the same Act for publishing an article on Isma's website.
The article was entitled "Kedatangan pendatang China bersama penjajah British satu bentuk pencerobohan (The arrival of Chinese immigrants together with the British is a form of intrusion)".
He is alleged to have committed both offences at the Isma office in Bandar Baru Bangi on May 6.
Abdullah claimed trial and was allowed bail of RM5,000. The court set July 18 for mention.
The court also ordered the Isma president to surrender his passport.
Since 8.30am, a group of Isma members had gathered outside the court for Abdullah Zaik to arrive.
The Isma president and his wife arrived some 15 minutes later and entered the Sessions Court at about 9am.
Charged over 'intrusion' posting
He is charged under Section 4 (1) (b) of the Sedition Act 1948, for a posting on the Isma website alleging that the Chinese arrival to peninsular Malaya during the British colonial period was a form of intrusion, and they are intruders.
Abdullah Zaik also allegedly claimed the British conspired with the Chinese to bully and discriminate against the Malays. If found guilty, Abdullah Zaik stands to face a maximum RM5,000 fine or prison of up to three years or both.
Abdullah’s lawyer, Haezreena Begum Abdul Hamid, initially applied for bail for her client to be reduced as he is a full-time Isma president and had to support his nine children between the ages of nine to 24, where all of them are still studying.
“Isma is just a non-governmental organisation and only gets its revenue from contributions from dakwah (propagation) and society activities. The charge is seen as very stern and adopted from colonial times and the prime minister wanted to replace this act with the National Harmony Bill,” she said.
“His wife is a lecturer at Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (KUIA), Selangor,” the lawyer added.
Lawyer Mohd Khannis Jusoh also appeared with Haezreena Begum, while DPPs Manoj Kurup and Mohd Abazafree Mohd Abas prosecuted.
