One Sabah kidnap over, another takes place

Just as the kidnap of a Chinese tourist off Sabah's east coast has been resolved, another kidnap has taken place in the same region.

Just as the kidnap of a Chinese tourist off Sabah's east coast has been resolved, another kidnap has taken place in the same region.
Bernama reported that a caretaker and a worker of Suluk descent were abducted from a fish farm by two armed men in Kampung Sapang, west of Pulau Timbun Mata in Semporna at 12.40 this morning.
Chan Sai Chiun, 32, from Perak, and a man identified only as Mazlan, who is in his 20s, were taken at about 12.40am from the fish cage farm owned by Davel Bay.
Sabah CID chief ACP Omar Mamah confirmed the incident when contacted.
It is the third abduction case in the east coast of Sabah this year.
The most recent case was reported on May 6 when five gunmen abducted a fish farm manager in Pulau Baik, off Lahad Datu, over a month after a female tourist from China was taken from a resort in Semporna.
In the Chinese tourist kidnap case, there are disputing claims as to whether ransom was paid to secure the release of the hostages, with Reuters reporting a large ransom and the government denying the report.
At the height of scathing criticism over the failure of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) to prevent the kidnappings, Tamparuli assemblyperson Wilfred Bumburing blamed Putrajaya for ignoring "repeated requests" for reinforcement and resources.
Wilfred also cited severe shortcomings in the special security zone, which was specifically set up to prevent further breach of Sabah's eastern maritime borders, after the long-drawn Suluk intrusion last year.
'Musa must take responsibility'
Meanwhile, in a statement today, Sabah DAP vice-chairperson Chan Foong Hin (left) called upon state Chief Minister Musa Aman to take responsibility over the repeated abductions over his failure ensure the safety of the people in the East Sabah Security Zone (Esszone).
“I am not belittling any sacrifice and contribution of the security personnel in ensuring peace and taking care of security under Esscom. But the never ending Sabah DAP is calling for the shut down of the inefficient and ineffective organisation.
“If Musa, who is also head of the state security council, do not admit his failure publicly, then Sabah DAP would consider to move a motion of no-confidence against his leadership in the coming state assembly sitting,” he said.
Chan, who is also Sri Tanjong assemblyperson, reiterated DAP’s earlier recommendation made to the chief minister, in which it called for Esscom to be replaced by a joint command, which is to be chaired by a senior police officer.
