The Selangor Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) is satisfied with the explanations given on the state government’s move to pump water from mining ponds into the water supply during the last water crisis.

Selcat chairperson Hannah Yeoh said the committee has heard explanations from the Chemistry Department and Health Department representatives as well as the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) chairperson Mohd Khairi Selamat during a hearing on June 10.

"Selcat is satisfied with the explanations from the Chemistry Department and Health Department representatives that they took water samples every week and verified that it is safe to be used," she told a press conference today.

The two-hour Selcat hearing was attended by all members of the panel except deputy speaker Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Besides Yeoh and Nik Nazmi, the committee members are Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyperson Azmin Ali, Hulu Kelang assemblyperson Saari Sungib, Sekinchan assemblyperson Ng Swee Lim, and Permatang assemblyperson Sulaiman Razak.

The persons called to testify include Klang MP Charles Santiago and Kelana Jaya assemblyperson Wong Chen, who had previously issued press statements expressing concerns that the water may be unsafe.

Yeoh (left) conceded that the hearing had to be rushed, because the panel needed to obtain information on an issue that the people of Selangor are worried about.

She said there was a shortage of time because she and other assemblypersons were busy preparing for the next state assembly sitting, which starts on Monday next week.

"We will table the full report on this issue during the next state assembly sitting at the end of the year," she added.
