A pro-Umno website has criticised Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin over his call on the police to uphold the law with regard to interfaith custody disputes.

The website, MYKMU.net, said Khairy's remarks gave the impression that he wanted Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar to adhere to the civil court order.

"Perhaps Khairy lacks the understanding or is the type who is fond of making careless statements.

"The fact is the police are caught in between the civil and syariah jurisdictions," the article says.

What is more "suspicious", said MYKMU.net, is Khairy's right to meddle in the affairs of the police force.

"If he is unhappy with the situation, he can raise the matter in the cabinet for a decision to be made," it adds.

The website said Khairy, who is also youth and sports minister, appeared to be on the same page with a coalition of Indian non-governmental organisations on this matter.

MYKMU.net was referring to the Malaysian Indian Progressive Association (Mipas), whose secretary-general S Barathidasan asked the police chief if he was "Muslim first, or a policeman first."

However, the article also noted that Khalid, "without referring to Khairy's reminder", reiterated that the police would take the middle path in such custody disputes.

In an earlier article on Mipas' criticism of the police, which was published on Malaysiakini, MYKMU.NET labelled the NGO as being "kurang ajar" (insolent).

"For Barathidasan's information, any Muslim will consider himself a Muslim first and then only the other things will come in.

"As a Muslim, the person needs to execute his duty with integrity and fairness, not prioritising Muslims without taking justice and the law into consideration," it added.
