Selangor speaker Hannah Yeoh’s approval on hudud motion may draw DAP into a political game it cannot afford to play, said Selangor DAP publicity secretary Ronnie Liu.

Although the motion is only for debate stage, the former Selangor assemblyperson said that Selangor Pakatan Rakyat would find it hard to escape political manipulation on the issue.

“This is a trick by Umno to deepen the fissures between Pakatan, otherwise Umno could have chosen to propose the motion in some other BN-ruled state,” Liu (left) said.

“Umno has ill intentions behind the submission of the motion, therefore Yeoh should not underestimate the trick but stop the Umno assemblyperson from putting forward the motion.”

He added that the Umno’s motion to debate on hudud in state assembly is akin to PAS’s intention to propose a Private Member's Bill in Parliament to pave the way for hudud in Kelantan.

“The only difference is that Pas takes a step while Umno takes two. (Umno) can proceed to proposing the bill after passing the debate,” he said in a statement.

Thumbs up from sec-gen, PKR

Sungai Air Tawar assemblyperson Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik submitted an application to table a motion to urge the Selangor government to conduct a feasibility study on hudud.

Yeoh had received four motions for the upcoming state assembly sitting, all of which came from BN, and approved three of them, including one on hudud, for debate.

Her move, however, won support from DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin for her openness to debate.

Zuraida (above) in a statement said that the parliment speaker should follow Yeoh's lead in approving motions for debate on important issues.

"Debates create better understanding for the issues concerned and generate safe space for discussion," she said.

She said that Yeoh showed "great maturity" by remaining neutral on the issue, despite her party's opposition to hudud.
