Hudud debate in Selangor on the cards

Selangor speaker Hannah Yeoh is unlikely to reject a motion by BN asking for the state to look into the possibility of enforcing hudud in the state.

Selangor speaker Hannah Yeoh is unlikely to reject a motion by BN asking for the state to look into the possibility of enforcing hudud in the state.
However, she stressed that the final decision had yet to be made.
"I am still considering (the motion) but it is unlikely (for me) to reject as it is only a motion urging the state government to study the feasibility of hudud in Selangor," she said in a text message to Malaysiakini today.
Yeoh added that it was stated in Standing Order 27 (5) that a speaker was given power to reject or allow any motion.
Umno's Sungai Air Tawar assemblyperson Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik, who mooted the study, was reported as saying that his proposal on hudud was submitted last week.
The motion by BN came after the PAS-led Kelantan state government had mulled tabling a private member's bill in Parliament to implement hudud law in the state. This strained ties in the opposition bloc.
Despite the controversy over hudud, Yeoh said she believed in giving room for debate inside the state assembly, even if the motions were tabled by the opposition.
"This is the right place for elected representatives to debate issues,” said the Subang Jaya assemblyperson.
Earlier, Selangor DAP deputy chief Gobind Singh Deo (left) had reiterated that DAP would firmly oppose any move to introduce hudud in the state.
The furore in Selangor also led DAP to suggest the presidents of MCA and Gerakan reject their upcoming cabinet appointments to back their opposition to hudud.
'Straying outside BN's consensus style'
Meanwhile, Selangor Gerakan chairperson David Ang Chin Tat called the proposal “unconstitutional and discriminatory”.
He said that Kamarol Zaki has strayed outside BN’s consensus style, and was merely promoting his own personal interests.
He urged Pakatan Rakyat, which controlled a majority in the Selangor state assembly, to simply use the speaker’s prerogative to strike down any such “ill-considered” bill.
"We in Gerakan are well aware of the unconstitutionality and impracticality of hudud.
"Therefore, we hope our BN partners as well as the opposition such as PAS share our views and concerns and uphold social responsibility by not attempting to table any hudud bill or proposal that could uproot the status quo," Ang said in a press statement.
