Polling day remains despite sultan's passing

TELUK INTAN Polling day for the Teluk Intan by-election will remain on May 31 despite the passing of Perak's Sultan Azlan Shah earlier today.
In a statement, the Election Commission, however, urged both sides to observe decorum as the state is going through a mourning period.

"All parties are urged to follow the election laws, regulations and ethics without raising sensitive issues which could cause unhappiness on either side," EC secretary Abdul Ghani Salleh said.
There is a ban on entertainment and celebrations in Perak until June 4.
The EC's announcement comes as DAP announced the cancellation of all press conferences and ceramah scheduled for today.
However, it is yet to be seen if the party will resume with its campaign schedule for tomorrow.
Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong, who is the BN candidate, said some programmes for tonight until tomorrow evening will be cancelled.
BN deputy chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin said all programmes are halted until after the burial.
"All functions to be held subsequently will be in the form of 'tahlil' and reading of the 'yasin'. Non-Muslim BN leaders will be left to conduct events according to their respective religions," Bernama reports him as saying.
Perak Menteri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir has said the nation will observe seven days of mourning while tomorrow, when the sultan's funeral will be held, will be a public holiday.
"The campaign is put on pause as a mark of respect for the passing of the Perak Sultan and there will no press event until further notice," DAP's by-election director Tony Pua said.
DAP will proceed with its fundraising dinner at the New Pao Long Restaurant tonight, but there will be no ceramah during the dinner.
Perak PAS Youth, too, has cancelled all programmes until after the funeral, while campaign activities will be on temporary halt.
“We have also instructed all divisions to hold prayer sessions,” the Perak PAS Youth chief Raja Ahmad Iskandar Yaacob (left) said in a statement.
“(We) also urge the Election Commission to delay all campaigns until the funeral is over tomorrow.”
However, it is expected that Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan will continue with his programmes as usual.
In a network messaging group established for members of the media, journalists were informed that Ahmad Maslan's programmes will proceed "without any entertainment."
His commitments include several ceramah runs to meet with the Indian community in Teluk Intan.
